2019 Ford Ranger vs 2019 Chevy Colorado Boston MA

2019 Ford Ranger vs 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Boston, MA

It is finally here. The much anticipated return of the Ford Ranger to the United States. The new and improved Ford Ranger is poised to make a splash in the U.S mid-size pickup segment.

The mid-size pickup segment includes heavyweights such as the Toyota Tacoma, Honda Ridgeline and Chevrolet Colorado. It is expected that segment competition will increase substantially with the arrival of the new Ford Ranger and Jeep Wrangler pickup.

We thought it would be useful to break down how the Ford Ranger will match up against the competition using head to head comparisons. If the Ford Ranger is to become the new segment leader it will first have to overtake the Chevrolet Colorado that currently holds the second spot.

The Chevrolet Colorado, first introduced in 2004, has been in constant competition for the top spot in the mid-size segment. After its impressive redesign in 2015, the Colorado is one of the most dependable mid-size pickups on the market today. It comes equipped with impressive off-road capability, great technology, and a number of interesting trim options.

Let's take a closer look at how these two trucks match up in a head to head comparison of the 2019 Ford Ranger vs 2019 Chevrolet Colorado.

Ranger vs Colorado: Powertrain Comparison

Let's start this head to head battle of compact trucks by going under the hood to see what they bring to the table.

The already-proven Chevy Colorado comes equipped with three powertrain options. The base is a 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine that puts out 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The next option is a 3.6 L V6 engine which produces 306 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.  The Colorado also brings a diesel option to the table with the 2.8L 4-cylinder diesel engine that gives you 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque that is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The new 2019 Ford Ranger brings a very impressive powertrain to the table as its only option (for now). The Ranger comes equipped with a 2.3 L Turbo engine that produces 308+ horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with a class exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission.  Using the same spread of gear ratios found in the F-150, the Ranger gives you a smooth ride and great fuel economy.

The engine found in the Ranger is a version of the one that powers the Ford Focus RS and Ford Mustang. The impressive powertrain gives the Ranger best in class payload and best in class torque accolades.

After these considerations, we believe that the powertrain category is a split decision. The Colorado currently gives you two more powertrain options than the Ranger and an impressive diesel engine. But the Ford Ranger offers more horsepower, more torque, and a more advanced 10-speed automatic transmission.

Ranger vs Colorado: Exterior Design and Styling

We understand that the decision of which truck has a more attractive exterior design is a somewhat subjective one. That being said let's take a closer look at the exterior styling and design of the Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado.

The new 2019 Ford Ranger will provide buyers with a choice of three trim levels: XL, XLT and Lariat. The Ranger gives you two appearance package options: The Sport Package and The Chrome Package.

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado will give buyers a choice of five trim levels: Base, WT, LT, Z71, and ZR2. There are also rumors of a possible premium or high country trim being added to the 2019 line up, but we will just have to wait and see.

The Colorado design team gave the truck a more stylish look which features curves and sharp lines.

We believe that both of these trucks have a very attractive appearance with several similarities. For this reason, we will call this a split decision and allow you to make your own decision in the style department.

Ranger vs Colorado: Technology

The 2019 Ford Ranger and 2019 Chevrolet Colorado both offer some of the latest technology features. Both trucks offer Android Auto and Apple Car Play compatibility along with 4G-LTE WiFi that can connect up to 10 wireless devices.

The 2019 Colorado will feature the always impressive Chevrolet MyLink technology. Easy smartphone integration makes for smooth navigation, and making phone calls on the road. The pickup will offer 7 and 8-inch touchscreen displays.

The 2019 Ford Ranger will come equipped with the intuitive new SYNC 3 system. The Ranger will feature a beautiful new 8-inch touchscreen. There will also be plenty of driver assist technologies available in the new Ranger. Available adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping system, and emergency breaking will keep you driving with peace of mind. Also available is a class exclusive Blind Spot Monitoring system that covers your trailer as well.

With the impressive list of driver assist technologies and the 8-inch touchscreen, we have to give the advantage to the Ford Ranger in the technology department.

Is The Ford Ranger Raptor Coming To the US?

The For Ranger F-150 is the ultimate toy and is an absolute blast to drive both on and off the pavements. The Ford truck enthusiasts have spoke loud and clear: they want a Ford Ranger Raptor to come to the United States. Will Ford Motor Company oblige and what will the Ranger Raptor look like? Well we have some pretty good data.

The Ranger Raptor recently surfaced in Bangkok, Thailand and it looks impressive.

It is speculated that Ford Ranger Raptor will be coming to the US market and could potentially be equipped with the 2.7L V6 Ecoboost that current powers the 2019 Edge ST and churns out 335 horsepower and 380lb-ft of torque.
